Stephanie Rodriguez is a Dominican American writer, illustrator, and graphic novelist from the Bronx. Encouraged by her self-proclaimed bruja Tía, she pursued art at the School of Visual Arts, where she discovered a passion for slice-of-life storytelling. Feeling like an outcast as one of the few native New Yorkers and Latinx students, she turned to comics to tell the stories she wasn’t seeing. She self-published, printed, and sold her comics at festivals and online, capturing the nuances of growing up in New York, heartbreak, and anxiety. Her work caught the attention of an editor at Penguin Random House, leading to her debut graphic novel, Doodles from the Boogie Down.
As she watched fellow comic artists transition into animation, Stephanie followed suit, selling comics at independent festivals like Comic Arts LA and forging industry connections. This journey led to opportunities in animation, where she realized her love for writing and visual storytelling could merge. Now working toward a career in TV writing, she blends her sharp comedic voice with heartfelt storytelling, dedicated to creating stories that reflect the vibrant, complex, and hilarious lives of young women of color, just like the ones she grew up with.
